What will I need to become a lorry driver?

Firstly, you need to have a valid UK or EU car driving licence before you can apply for your provisional Larger Goods Vehicle (LGV) driving licence. You will also be required to pass a medical before you can apply for your provisional LGV licence.

From September 2009, you will also be required have a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (also known as Driver CPC) to go with your LGV driving licence. This is intended to improve road safety for new bus, coach and lorry drivers. To retain your Driver CPC, you need to undertake 35 weeks of Periodic Training every five years to ensure that your skills are fresh.

Which Category of License Is Right For You?

LGV licenses are spilt into two categories depending on the weight and the size of the vehicle these are known as Category 'C' and Category 'C + E'

Category C1: is a Rigid goods vehicle over 3.5 tonnes but not over 7.5 tonnes. Vehicles drawing trailers not over 750kg maximum authorised mass are included in this category. Minimum age 18.

Category C: is also known as a Rigid. The licence required to drive a Category 'C' vehicle is also known as a 'Class 2'. This category allows the holder to drive any rigid goods vehicle with more than 2 axles. Minimum age 21

Category C + E: is a Articulated Lorry, often called Artic, also known as class 1. This category allows the holder to drive a vehicle weighing over 3.5 tonnes with a trailer over 750 kg maximum authorised mass. This licence can be obtained after 6 months experience of a Category C vehicle. Minimum age 21.
